Three women with different types of veiled hats

Veiling in Millinery – Elegance with a Hint of Mystery

There’s something about a veil that instantly transforms a hat. Whether it’s a delicate wisp across the eyes or a dramatic sweep that frames the whole face, veiling has a way of adding mystery, romance, and timeless style. It’s one of those millinery details that never goes out of fashion.

What is Veiling?

Veiling is usually made from a fine net fabric — traditionally silk, though today it’s more commonly synthetic. Don’t let that put you off; modern veiling is wonderfully versatile, responding beautifully to steam and shaping. A simple veil can look chic on its own, or you can embellish it with crystals, dots, feathers, or trims to create something truly unique.

Designing with Veils

The first question I ask when designing a veil is always: what’s the occasion?

  • For weddings, a soft eye veil can be dreamy and romantic.

  • For the races, a bold full-face or even all-round veil can be fabulously dramatic.

  • For parties or cocktails, a short, sculpted veil can add just the right touch of intrigue.

Veils can cover just one eye, sweep across the whole face, or encircle the crown of the hat — it’s all about how much mystery you want to create!

Working with Veiling

Before you start shaping, always give your netting a quick press to make it sit nicely. A rounded block or poupée head works well for steaming, and remember to protect it with cling film (steam and glue are not a block’s best friends!).

Two of the most popular veil styles are:

🎀 The Double-Gathered Veil

This is one of the simplest to create, and so versatile. You gather and secure both ends of the netting, position them above the ears or on a headband, then let the veil drape gently across the face. It’s easy, elegant, and instantly elevates even the simplest headpiece.

🎀 The Cylinder Veil

For more drama, the cylinder veil encircles the whole head. Once shaped on a block, it forms a dome that can be stiffened, trimmed, and decorated. Think vintage glamour — it’s a style that turns heads and photographs beautifully.

Experiment and Embellish

The joy of veiling is in the experimenting. It doesn’t have to stop at classic netting — organza, chiffon, or dotted “Merry Widow” veiling can all add texture and interest. A few carefully placed crystals or a floral trim can completely change the character of a piece.

Why We Love It

Veiling is one of those magical millinery touches that can transform a hat from lovely to extraordinary. It frames the face, adds elegance, and gives the wearer that wonderful feeling of stepping into another world — whether it’s a wedding aisle, the Royal Enclosure, or the dance floor.
